Goal Setting: Part 2
A day or so ago, I posted what I believe to be some of the most helpful tips that I ever received when it came to goal setting.
So, let us review…
S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Accountable
I am going to go backwards a little and discuss accountability. You must select your person that you are accountable is someone that you can trust. They don’t need to be your best friend or your spouse. I would tell you not to use your spouse it will lead to arguments. I know some of you will disagree, but it really is up to individual couple. I know it does not work for me or for several other Realtors and others that I have coached.
#4 – R – Realistic: Your goals need to be Realistic, you can’t expect to lose 100 lbs. in a month.
I know I can close 10 or more in a month, but I am also pretty sure my systems will not sustain that kind of growth. So, I am going to build up to it. I know I need to lose 50 lbs, but I know I can’t do it in a month. I am going to say that, but I also have a BHAG, a Big Hairy Audacious Goal, of owning a jet someday.
#5 – T- Timely: Have a start and ending time.
I am going to use January 1st as starting time, but I am going to go back and visit my goals every couple of weeks. My end time is going to be December 31st. I am sure that I will be going back and reviewing every so often, I may have to change them forward, but I will not back track. You need can make smaller goals that lead into bigger ones. I am going to be doing that.
Now, most of you will stop there. As, I am sure that we have read or heard of S.M.A.R.T., but I have added “Y”.
#6 – Y- Yours: Yes, yours. Mine.
Your goals are your goals. You can have family goals, but they are yours and not someone that projects on your. I used to work for a guy that would give me his goals for me, not ones that he and I discussed. He would give me unrealistic goals that no one could reach and then when you fell short. He would not be nice about it in front of others. Make every goal you do yours. YOURS
So, this week take the time to do your goals and follow the SMARTY system. I am going to be and I welcome all of the comments and even a few accountability partners. I am going to kill it this year. I want to bring some people along with me. My office is getting the make over that is has needed the last few years. My next blog will be my goals for Great in 09 and how to implement your goals.
Goal Setting
I do some coaching from time to time for people who are willing to learn. I know not all of us are coach-able. I know I was not in the beginning.
Here is one lesson that I learned and I hope you can learn something from or as much as I have learned from it.
So, lets get started…
Your goals should contain the following 6 guidelines.
I call it the S.M.A.R.T.Y Method. It is still a work in progress and always being tuned up.
#1 – S – Specific: Your goals should be as specific as possible.
I have read blogs on AR that people want to close more loans or more transactions. I don’t simply want to close more, I want an exact number. I want to close 8 per month. I have hit 10 before and less than 2, and I am sick of the yo-yo method that I have developed. And, believe it or not 8 is not enough, but I am building my business for the long haul and I need to make sure my systems are in place before I turn the drip into a flow.
#2 – M – Measurable: You need to measure your success or lack thereof to re-access your goal.
I keep track of my numbers and can trace them back to an ad or a referral source. Plus, you need to be able to tell if you are hitting your goal numbers. In the past, I would think I was hitting my numbers, but at the end of the month. I would not be close to it, or I would be just short and that would drive me insane and my wife would hit me in the head with the rolling pin.
#3 – A – Accountable - You need to be accountable to someone.
If you tell no one, if keep them a secret you dead in the water. Someone has to know what you are striving to do or you can keep changing your goals to make up for your lack or discipline or desire.
There are the first 3 steps in Goal writing. I look forward to reading your comments and the sharing of your goals. I am looking forward to a great 08.
