Are you toeing the line? Are you engaging others in your social network or are you harassing them into talking to you or turning them off that they unfollow you or hide your stream. Essentially blocking you.
Good car-cast, however most of it does not make sense. No one forces you to do anything, you do it yourself. If they harass you, why do you not just unfollow them? Or is it you do not want to be unfollowed because of engagement and loose a “number” of followers?
The vid in the car is always exciting as I feel like I need to help you watch your mirrors or something, LOL
I do get what you mean about the constant “one way” or “it’s all about me” use of social media platforms.
Truth be told, people who use these tools for “me, me ,me, me” communication, tend to do that in the real world as well.
The “Red Suit” is a case in point. Meet her in the real world and you will get 100x more “me me me” than you do on Twitter or her blog.
Leadership both on and off line is about inspiring followers, not forcing information or rules or orders down their throats.
I think this touches on part of the point from our discussion last week at BDub’s. There are people using some of these vehicles as marketing media not social media. There are aspects of my portfolio that are far more social and some that are more marketing. For me Facebook is less social and more message/marketing. That seems out of place on FB as it is on being social.
Not sure what came about for the plans for next week, but I hope at some point we can have a broad, open group discussion at one of our events about levels of engagement in “social” media.
BTW – you need to work on keeping at least one hand on the wheel. I’d hate for you to become a legal precedent for self-incriminating, self-posted video evidence of reckless driving

I agree with you. I think we should all ask ourselves “Do people cringe when they see my posts?” and get feedback from others at regular intervals.
Of course, if people aren’t happy with someone, they can unfollow. However, I think that misses the point of social media, about being in business, about growing as a person. But then again, those are my own existential biases!
This is a good conversation to have. However, I imagine the people who need to hear it and engage with it the most aren’t listening.
P.S. Please keep your hands on the wheel. You make me nervous!
Daver, you are crazy! As for social media and inbound marketing we are at the early stages of a major movement and the rules and morays are still being fought out. What if I like honey? And, that “get more flies with honey,” is a long term view. And you actually agree with the point when you discuss how to engage people and build friendships and move forward…
Now I want honey.
By the way, if you take your hands off the steering wheel that much on our way to Chicago tonight for Social Media Day, you’ll be in a shell. That shell will be a coffin. That coffin will also include the sandal I was wearing when I put my foot in your “ear” for taking your hands off the steering wheel so much.
Good thoughts…

I’ve never accused you of being a hashtag nazi, you ARE a hashtag nazi. (and Dalton )
Spam is always bad, and hashtags can be abused. Prob is regular people don’t care about it and most don’t monitor them like you do so they don’t care. They are a free form thing that can never be tamed. And if people did start actually monitoring them all the time, it would just bring more spam to the table. The spammers will go to whateevr they can abuse the most.
And yes, call people out. I hate having to be the only ones with the balls to do it. Though some would argue I am on the harrasment side of your argument, but that’s only because I know they can’t actually have a conversation about it because they have no defense for what they do.
Honey argument didn’t really fit, I know the context as I was there for the conversation but really threw off the rest of the video. I’ve personally got way more feedback on the negative over positive. Most don’t even see the positive or remember it.
Who cares what their SEO is if they want to have a conversation with started from twitter. They obviously weren’t trying to pull you through search so what does the SEO of their site matter? I realize you are an SEO guy but in the end, that shit doesn’t matter when you pulled someone from elsewhere. Having a quality site filled with quality content that drives whoever you pulled in to do what you want them to do (I hate the word conversion as it really doesn’t apply to a lot of those situations because not pushing them at anything) is more important at that point. Not that these people do have a quality site at that point but that’s not what I’m getting at.
Overall I have a better understanding then most about where the video came from because of other conversations we have but I can see a lot of people getting confused by it. Need to get that whole thought process down before you hit record my man, I know the car cast is suppose to be mainly you jsut winging it but in the case of this one I don’t think many understood where it was going.
@Allyn – That’s the overall narcistic nature of SM and especially the peopel who consider themselves the leaders. On top of it being all abuot them, you are also not suppose to point out how they don’t have a clue what they are talking about because they are the “experts” so how dare you point out their idiocy with facts and data, especially the facts and data they themself regurgitated from where. And I loved the “Red suit” ladies attempt to get peopel to pay her to learn about Twitter marketing by spamming twitter. Classic case of teh person not getting they dont’ have clue.
@scott – you can’t unfollow people who abuse hashtags and search as they show up no matter what. On top of teh other spam that comes at you from followbots and @mention spammers that you can’t preemptively stop. Lots of people , especially “social media experts”, don’t seem to get this. You can only unfollow peeps that spam your home feed and that you follow, not everywhere else. Richard´s last [type] ..Rahsaan has an Ugly Mug Awareness Day comes to a close
