Why some Agents Fail at Social?

Why so many real estate agents fail at social?

Just about two weeks ago, I was sitting by the pool in sunny Punta Gorda with nothing better to do.  With iPad in hand I started to peruse the real estate Twitter stream that I set up. I was not looking for anyone or anything to pick, but for an idea that I could glean (that I could steal for my local market). However,  I starting seeing a trend develop. I was noticing some real estate agents trying to fit that round peg into the square hole. In a sense, pushing old media/marketing ways into new marketing mediums.

Let me start out by saying…I really do like the idea of listings getting their own website. I like the “idea” of it, but there is a better way to do it. A much better way to do it, but your new listing does not need it’s own twitter account. In my mind, the thought of that has #FAIL all over it.

First, I am will to bet that if your listing has a Twitter account then I can safely assume that you do. So, why are you trying to bleed away your social brand by enticing them to look away. There are plenty of other distractions out there don’t give them another outlet.

Second, in an effort to be noticed, you are probably using a local hashtag or two. Also, if you are tweeting as a “house”. I do not see envision a lot of changing up of the content or tweets  that much. Chances are very high then, that you are going to be darn close to the Twitter spam with your near constant and unchanging twitter message.

Third, by tweeting as a house, you are missing a great opportunity to brand yourself as anything but a twitter spammer. If you do not understand the power of branding then we have a lot more work to do than just altering your Twitter use. More on the power of branding, I still get recognized as a local mortgage expert even after being out of the business for nearly two years and rarely does a week or two go buy that I get a question or a call.

While, I may applaud you for the tad bit of innovation, but you are barely out of the box on this one. There are so many other options out there that you can take advantage of that you are not doing. Also, I do not want to hear that you do no have time. We all have the same 24 hours. It is time to work smarter rather than harder.

Also, it is time to get over the “it has to be perfect” or I will never post it. No one is, and not many of us expect it and it is better to seen as being out there doing something than not seen at all. It is really something to experience the “ISYOT” effect. If you want to be a successful agent you want to be recognized and have people say to you, “hey, I have seen you out there”. More on that in a later post.

As Twitter grows in popularity along with the other social channels, and as any new medium. Marketers, in any business, try to fit the round peg in a square hole. They try to  broadcast as if they are still marketing in a newspaper, radio or TV. I urge anyone trying to use Twitter or any other social medium to learn that particular channels best use and find out what your follower expects.

The majority of those on Twitter generally expect some level engagement rather than tuning into a broadcast.

Oh, the one huge downside of having every listing having it’s own website – search engine rankings, but that discussion is for another day.

Let’s burn some boats

FYI: I will be an active agent again here real soon, by 2/1/12

90 Day Challenge: week 1 update

I am pretty sure it is no secret that I have a bit of an ego or that I am overly arrogant. However, I wear it well. I like to think that it is no so much in your face. I just am. Well, I did not get fat overnight. In reality, it took a few years of bad eating habits and slothfulness to get to here. I had heard about this condition or mindset called Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Ok, it is more than a mindset.

Well, lets walk back over to my ego.

Many of you saw this...

Not the Real Daver

I was at a Purdue football game. I had my shorts on, t-shirt, hiking boots and rugby shirt tied around my waist. These hot soririty girls kept yelling, “Chris…Chris..Chriss”. In my general direction, and I just could not figure who they were yelling at. Well, I looked like Chris Farley and that should have been a wake up call.

Meanwhile I saw myself like something more like this…

Daver as Arnold

For several years, I was in the Purdue Bodybuilding and Powerlifting club. I could lift a ton, liked to work out, but ate like crap. Well, years of this abuse led me to where I am today or rather where I was a week ago.

I started my 90 Day Challenge @ 292 on 11/01/11

I am looking at the Noom app on my phone and that is what I put in.

One week int my 90 Day Challenge @ 286.4 on 11/08/11

I have not been keeping that good of track what I am eating, but I will tell you this. I am eating a ton better or a ton smarter.

I start every day off with a protein shake

Lunch is often another protein shake or something reasonable and moderate.  I did eat at McDonalds’s one time as I was really hungry and needed something before I completely passed out, but all I got was a McDouble. I know not great, but not off the deep end. I did eat out with friends one night, that was a steak, salad and most of a lightly buttered potato.  I followed that up with some popcorn at a movie theater. Again, I am claiming a small victory.

In the past I would have scarfed down 2 full buckets laden with  super yummy butter, but this time I did not even finish the first bucket. Sundays are always tricky for me, church = donuts. No, communion does not consist of a stop at the Dunkins or Krispy Kreme, but damn I wish it did sometimes. We have a table full of them at church. Thankfully, they were either all gone by the time I got there or they did not have them. Good news is that I did not have them.

Sunday presented another challenge for me. I did not want to cook, the Wife and the Girl were both feeling sick, but the Wife and I ordered a pizza. Wait before you lynch me. In the past, I would have torn into that pizza and eaten half it not more with garlic butter to boot, This night, I had 3 slices.

The real secret to my success has been the drinking of the protein in the morning. I feel fuller longer whereas in the past I would have bagel or nothing. I would have worked out on a near empty stomach. Well, that would just drive me into storage mode.

I promise. I will keep a better track or my food intake and exercise. I am biking often where over the last of keeping track on the Noom app. I have burned 1200 calories riding 44.1 miles.

Here are my before pics that I should have posted last week:

This week, I will be getting back to weights. I plan on lifting 3 days this week.

I want to thank you all for your support, your accountability and your prayers. I have heard from a lot of you that I have known over the years whether it be in real life or on social. I am not stopping till I drop this weight.

How Politicians can use Social Media to get Elected
